SEED: brown

Origin & Breeding History: ‘CDC Lumio' (experimental designation C12011) originated from the cross between the lines C02074 and C00038, conducted in the summer of 2004 at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan using the approach method of plant breeding. Individual F1 plants were grown in the field in 2005 and screened for brown seed colour. The F2 to F4 generations were grown in a bulk nursery in Saskatoon from 2006 to 2008, respectively. Seed from a single F4 plant was grown in a hill plot in 2009. Selected panicles from the F5 hill were sown in paired F6 hills in 2010. C12011 was selected from a bulked F6 hill based on seed colour and grain yield. C12011 was further evaluated for yield in 2011 and 2012. From 2013 to 2018, C12011 was entered in the Glabrous Canary Seed Cooperative Registration Tests and later named ‘CDC Lumio'. Breeder seed was established at the F12 generation in 2016.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘CDC Lumio' were conducted at the University of Saskatchewan during the 2019 and 2024 growing seasons. There were 4 replicates arranged in an RCB design. Plots were 3.6 metres long by 1.2 metres wide consisting of five rows. Seeding density was 1400 seeds per plot resulting in a maximum of 5600 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 40 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
