Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'AC Caribou' and 'Spredor 4'
Summary: In mid-summer, at 10% flowering, the plants of 'AAC Trueman' are shorter than those of AC Caribou'. The fall re-growth of 'AAC Trueman' is shorter than that of both reference varieties. The root type of 'AAC Trueman' ranges between taproot and rhizomatous whereas that of AC Caribou' is taproot and that of Spredor 4' is creeping. The root crown of AAC Trueman' is wide while that of AC Caribou' is of medium width.
Description:
PLOIDY: tetraploid
PLANT: absent or very low tendency to grow during winter
FALL GROWTH HABIT (AFTER FALL CUT): intermediate (between semi-prostrate and semi-erect)
STEM: sparse pubescence
FLOWER: high frequency of plants with very dark blue violet flowers, low frequency of plants with variegated flowers, very low to low frequency of plants with white, cream or yellow flowers
ROOT: ranges between taproot and rhizomatous type, wide crown
POD: crescent-shape to coiled in one or two spirals, very dense pubescence
Origin & Breeding History: AAC Trueman' (experimental designation CRS-1001) is a synthetic variety originating from selections out of the alfalfa variety Rhizoma'. In 1994, a space planted nursery was established at the Nappan Research Farm in Nappan, Nova Scotia, composed of 3 reps of 25 plants from each of five seed lots of Rhizoma'. Following 2 cycles of selection for winter hardiness, drought tolerance, water logging tolerance and grazing capacity, 50 plants were selected based on seed yield. In October 1997, equal amounts of the half-sib seed from each plant was combined to produce Syn-1 seed of CRS-1001, later named AAC Trueman'.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC Trueman' were conducted at the AAFC Nappan Research Farm site in Nappan, Nova Scotia in 2022 and 2023. The trial included 3 replicates per variety with plots arranged in a RCB design. The variety was seeded at a rate of 16 kg/ha on June 19, 2019. Plots were 5 metres by 10 metres. Observations were based on a minimum of 60 plants per variety. Plant height measurements were based on 99 plants in 2022 and 102 plants in 2023. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
