'String Theory' was selected in the summer of 2016 based on plant growth habit, flower type, foliage colour and size, and disease resistance. Asexual reproduction of the variety was first conducted by shoot tip cuttings in 2016 in Zeeland, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'String Theory' was conducted in a galvanized steel structure covered with black mesh shade fabric in June 2023 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. The plants were grown in 23 cm round pots, one plant per pot with 45 cm spacing between the pots. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
