Variety used for comparison: 'Balangwhim' (AngelMist White Improved)
Summary: 'Anwhit' is a taller plant with fewer flowering branches and narrower, lighter green leaves than 'Balangwhim'. Glossiness of the upper surface of the leaves is weak for 'Anwhit' while it is moderate to strong for 'Balangwhim'. 'Anwhit' has longer racemes, more flowers per axil and longer pedicels than 'Balangwhim'. The flowers of 'Anwhit' have larger lobes than those of 'Balangwhim'.
Description:
'Anwhit' is an angelonia variety with upright growth habit. Pubescence on the branches is moderate to dense. The leaves are lanceolate in shape with an acute shaped apex and round shaped base. The leaf margins are serrate. Colour of the leaves is light green on the upper and lower surfaces. There is sparse pubescence on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves. Glossiness of the upper surface of the leaf is weak. The leaves have no petiole.
'Anwhit' has a raceme type of inflorescence with the flowers located in the leaf axils. The number of flowers per axil is two, or three. The angle of the pedicel in relation to the peduncle is acute to right angled. The flowers are white with a white palate.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Anwhit' is the product of a planned breeding program which took place at Elsner pac Jungplanzen, Dresden, Germany in July to September of 1999. The objectives of the program were to create new, compact angelonia varieties that have good branching characteristics, flower early and have desirable flower colours. It originated from a combination breeding within a breeding group of 50 white flowered, unnamed seedlings. A pollen mixture from the breeding group was used to pollinate all plants within the group. The breeding group was designated 'An 60'. In June of 2000, 'Anwhit' was selected by the breeder at a greenhouse in Dresden, Germany based on its compact growth habit, good branching characteristics, early flowering and large, white flowers.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Anwhit' were conducted in a greenhouse during the summer of 2003 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial consisted of 15 plants per variety grown from cuttings rooted in week 11 and transplanted into 11cm pots at week 17. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
