Variety used for comparison: 'Balarckle' (Angelmist Dark Purple)

Summary: The plant and flower of 'ANBLU140' are larger than that of 'Balarckle'. The upper side of the leaf of 'ANBLU140' has strong glossiness while the leaf of 'Balarckle' has medium glossiness. The flower chamber of 'ANBLU140' is larger than that of 'Balarckle'. The flower chamber of 'ANBLU140' is broader than it is long whereas the chamber of 'Balarckle' is longer than it is broad.

PLANT: upright growth habit
SHOOT: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration below inflorescence

LEAF (UPPER SIDE): dark green, strong glossiness

COROLLA: absent or weak reflexing of lobes, no stripes
UPPER LIP OF COROLLA: dark violet (RHS 83A) on inner side
LOWER LIP OF COROLLA: dark violet (RHS 83A) on inner side, medium undulation of margin
COROLLA CHAMBER: broader than long, medium intensity of purple red markings on inner side, markings on inner side are of medium density
COROLLA POUCH: yellow green on inner side
NECTARY BULGE: violet

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'ANBLU140' originated from a cross conducted by the breeder Elke Steffen in Dresden, Germany during the summer of 2014. Both the female and male parents used to conduct the cross were unknown proprietary seedlings. 'ANBLU140' was selected in the summer of 2015 based on plant growth habit, branching characteristics, flower colour and flower performance. Asexual reproduction of 'ANBLU140' was first conducted by cuttings in the summer of 2015 in Dresden, Germany.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'ANBLU140' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2019 at Bioflora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15cm pots on April 12, 2019. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 24, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
