Varieties used for comparison: 'Royal Gala', 'Cox's Orange Pippin' and 'Fiesta'

Summary: The fruit of 'PremA17' is obloid shaped whereas the fruit of 'Royal Gala' is conic shaped. 'PremA17' has fruit skin with a yellow green ground colour whereas both 'Cox's Orange Pippin' and 'Fiesta' have fruit skin with a green ground colour.

Description:

TREE: medium to strong vigour, ramified, upright growth habit, fruit bearing on spurs only, begins flowering very early to early, early to mid-season eating maturity
ONE-YEAR OLD SHOOT: medium thickness, medium to long internode length, light brown on sunny side, medium density of pubescence on distal half, medium to many lenticels

PETIOLE: short to medium length, large extent of anthocyanin colouration from base
LEAF: upwards attitude in relation to shoot, medium to long, medium to broad, medium to large length to width ratio, light to medium green, serrate type 1 incisions of margin, glabrous to weak pubescence on lower side

FLOWER: dark pink at balloon stage, medium diameter when petals are pressed into horizontal position, free arrangement of petals, stigma positioned at same level as anthers

YOUNG FRUIT: medium to large extent of anthocyanin overcolour
FRUIT: medium sized, short to medium height, medium diameter, low to medium height to diameter ratio, obloid shape, moderate ribbing, moderate crowning at calyx end, medium to large eye, short sepal
FRUIT SKIN: absent or weak bloom, moderate greasiness, yellow green ground colour, medium area of russet around stalk attachment and on cheeks, absent or small area of russet around eye basin, medium to many medium sized lenticels
OVERCOLOUR OF SKIN: medium sized area, red, medium intensity, solid flush with weakly defined narrow to medium width stripes
STALK: long, medium thickness
STALK CAVITY: medium depth and width
EYE BASIN: medium depth, broad
FRUIT FLESH: firm to very firm, cream colour, closed or slightly open aperture of locules in transverse section

Origin & Breeding History: 'PremA17' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent 'A045R13T007' and the male parent 'A020R02T167' in 1995 carried out at The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. 'PremA17' was selected for its fruit appearance, texture, and flavour.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'PremA17' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number APP182, purchased from the New Zealand Intellectual Property Office, Plant Variety Rights Office, New Zealand. The trials were conducted by the Cultivar Centre, Plant & Food Research, Havelock North, New Zealand, from 2014 to 2016.
