Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Co-op 25' and 'Ambrosia'

Summary: On the sun facing side, the one-year-old shoot of ‘8S5505' is medium brown while that of ‘Co-op 25' is reddish brown and that of ‘Ambrosia' is dark brown. The distal half of the one-year-old shoot of ‘8S5505' has dense pubescence while that of ‘Ambrosia' has medium density pubescence. The one-year-old shoot of ‘8S5505' has many lenticels whereas that of ‘Co-op 25' has absent or very few to few lenticels. From the base, the extent of anthocyanin colouration on the leaf petiole of ‘8S5505' is small while it is of medium extent for that of ‘Ambrosia'. With the petals pressed into a horizontal position, the diameter of the flower of ‘8S5505' is larger than that of ‘Co-op 25'. The stigma of the flower of ‘8S5505' is positioned at the same level as the anthers while the stigma of ‘Ambrosia' is positioned above the anthers. The fruit of ‘8S5505' is shorter and smaller in diameter than that of both reference varieties. The fruit skin of ‘8S5505' has an absent or weak bloom with a yellow ground colour while that of the reference varieties have a moderate bloom with a yellow green ground colour. The lenticels on the fruit skin of ‘8S5505' are medium sized while they are small for ‘Ambrosia'. The fruit stalk of ‘8S5505' is shorter than that of both reference varieties. The flesh of the fruit of ‘8S5505' is very firm while that of ‘Ambrosia' is firm. The flesh of the fruit of ‘8S5505' is cream coloured while it is greenish for that of ‘Co-op 25'. The harvesting maturity of the fruit of ‘8S5505' is mid to late season while that of ‘Co-op 25' is early to mid-season. The eating maturity of the fruit of ‘8S5505' is late season while that of ‘Co-op 25' is early to mid-season.

Origin & Breeding History: ‘8S5505' originated from a cross conducted between ‘8S6923' and 'Co-op 25' at the Summerland Research and Development Centre in Summerland, BC in 2000. The variety was promoted to a second test in 2007 and selected for its taste, texture, appearance and storage qualities. Propagation is clonal through budding and grafting onto budwood.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘8S5505' was conducted in 2024 at the Summerland Varieties Corp. trial block in Summerland, BC. The trial consisted of a minimum of 10 trees per variety planted in 2009 and grafted onto M9 rootstock. Trees were planted approximately 0.9 metres apart within a row and the rows were 3 metres apart. Observations and measurements were taken on 10 trees or 10 parts of trees for all varieties. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
