Summary: 'Roma' has a taller plant height than 'Lars'. 'Roma' has larger leaves than 'Lars' which have no anthocyanin colouration while 'Lars' has weak anthocyanin in the petiole. 'Roma' has no anthocyanin in the peduncle while 'Lars' has weak anthocyanin. 'Roma' has a slightly larger head diameter than 'Lars'. 'Roma' has violet coloured outer bracts with dark reddish-purple central florets while 'Lars' has dark purple bracts and central florets.
Description:
'Roma' has an upright bushy growth habit with sparse branching. The stems are medium green in colour with no pubescence. The leaves are arranged in a rosette and are palmately lobed. The outline shape of the leaf blade is orbicular. The shape of the apex is acute and the base is sagittate. The leaf margins are serrate. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green in colour with no variegation. There is a petiole present.
'Roma' flowers early to midseason and has a medium length of flowering. The peduncle has no anthocyanin colouration. The inflorescence type is a compound umbel which is terminal in position and erect in attitude. The flower head has a moderate number of bracts which are medium in length and narrow to medium in width.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Roma' originated from a controlled cross between Astrantia major 'Ruby Wedding' as the pollen parent and an unnamed selection of Astrantia major as the seed parent. The objective of the breeding program was to create new varieties with unique flower colours and early, continuous flowering. The initial selection of this variety occurred in Hummelo, The Netherlands in 1992.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Roma' were conducted at Oxford Station, Ontario in 2001. The trials consisted of ten plants per variety grown under field conditions. Plants were spaced 0.40 metre within the row and rows were spaced 1.0 metre apart.
