The cross was made between the female parent, a selection of Baptisia cinerea and the male parent, a proprietary selection of Baptisia alba. 'Vanilla Cream' was first selected in the spring of 2007 based on its growth habit and flower colour. Propagation of 'Vanilla Cream' by stem cuttings was first conducted in 2008.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Vanilla Cream' was grown in a polyhouse at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario, during the summer of 2016. The trial consisted of 12 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. The plants were grown in 28 cm diameter round pots spaced approximately 45 cm apart. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
