Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Sisler', 'Robust' and 'Lacey'

Summary: 'BT490' has a slightly narrower flag leaf than 'Lacey' and a slightly longer flag leaf than 'CDC Sisler'. The time of spike emergence for 'BT490', when the first spikelet is visible on 50 % of the spikes, is earlier than 'CDC Sisler'. 'BT490' has weaker spike glaucosity than 'CDC Sisler', 'Robust' and 'Lacey'. The spike of 'BT490' is shorter than 'CDC Sisler', and 'Robust', but slightly longer than 'Lacey'. The curvature of the first segment of the rachis is weak in 'BT490' while medium in 'Lacey'. 'BT490' is shorter in plant height when the kernel is beginning to ripen than 'CDC Sisler'. The spiculation of the inner lateral nerves of the dorsal side of the lemma is weaker in 'BT490' than 'CDC Sisler'.

Description:

'BT490' is a six-row spring, malting barley variety which has an erect juvenile growth habit with green coleoptiles. At tillering, the plants have an erect growth habit, with absent to very sparse pubescence on the sheaths of the lower leaves. There is weak to medium pubescence on the blade and very weak to weak on the sheath of the flag leaf. The sheath of the flag leaf has weak to medium glaucosity. There is weak pubescence on the auricle margins.

Spike emergence of 'BT490' is mid season. The collar shape is v-shaped to cup shaped. At the beginning of anthesis, there is strong anthocyanin colouration at the tips of the lemma awns. At the end of pollen development, spike attitude is erect with absent to very weak glaucosity. When the kernels are fully developed, the spike is parallel in shape and medium in density. The first segment of the rachis is medium in length with a weak curvature. The lemma awns are longer than the spike. The margins of the lemma awns are smooth.

The kernels of 'BT490' are husked with very weak to weak anthocyanin colouration of the nerves of the lemma of the kernel. The aleurone layer is whitish and the rachilla hairs are long. Spiculation of the inner lateral nerves of the dorsal side of the lemma are absent to very weak with no hairiness of the ventral furrow. Disposition of the lodicules is clasping. The kernel is medium in length and width with incomplete horseshoe shaped basal markings.

'BT490' is resistant to False loose smut, black semi-loose smut (Ustilago nigra), and True loose smut (Ustilago nuda). It is moderately resistant to Common root rot (Cochliobolus sativus, Fusarium spp.), Spot blotch (Cochliobolus sativus), and Stem rust (Puccina graminis). 'BT490' is moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Net blotch (Pyrenophora teres), and moderately susceptible to Scald (Rhynchosporium secalis), Covered smut (Ustilago hordei), and Yellow dwarf (barley yellow dwarf virus). It is susceptible to Septoria speckled leaf blotch (Septoria passerinii), and Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum; perfect state Gibberella zeae)

'BT490' has fair to good lodging, shattering resistance, tolerance to straw and neck breaking. It has fair tolerance to drought, and good malting quality.

Origin & Breeding History: 'BT490', which was known by the experimental designation SM99750, and originated from the cross SM95096 / SM94043 made at the Crop Development Center, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1995 using the modified bulk-pedigree method. It was selected based on agronomic performance, disease resistance and malting quality. 'BT490' was entered in the Western Cooperative 6 row barley test in 2001 and 2002. It was a first year entry in the 2002 collaborative malting test.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'BT490' were conducted at the Crop Development Center, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2002/2003. Plots consisted of 2 rows, 3.7 metres long with about 0.4 metres between rows. There were three treatments per line with two replicates arranged in an RCB design.
