Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AC Metcalfe', 'AAC Synergy', 'Newdale' and 'AAC Connect'

Summary: At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves for 'AAC Goldman' is low whereas it is absent or very low for 'AC Metcalfe'. 'AAC Goldman' has a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles whereas it is very weak for 'AC Metcalfe'. At the beginning of ripening, the plant height, which includes the awns, of 'AAC Goldman' is taller than that of 'Newdale'. Excluding the awns, the spike of 'AAC Goldman' is longer than that of 'AC Metcalfe' and 'AAC Synergy'. The first segment of the rachis in 'AAC Goldman' is longer than the first rachis segment in 'AC Metcalfe' and 'AAC Connect'. 'AAC Goldman' has a longer rachilla than that of 'AC Metcalfe' and 'AAC Synergy'. The kernel of 'AAC Goldman' is longer than that of 'AC Metcalfe'. The thousand kernel weight of 'AAC Goldman' is greater than that of 'Newdale'.

Description:

PLANT: two row, spring malting-type barley, erect to semi-erect growth habit at tillering, absent or very sparse pubescence on lower leaf sheath

FLAG LEAF (AT BOOTING): low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very sparse pubescence on blade
FLAG LEAF SHEATH: very strong glaucosity at booting, absent or very sparse pubescence
AURICLE: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or very sparse pubescence on the margins

SPIKE: early to mid-season emergence, medium to strong glaucosity, erect to semi-erect attitude, predominantly cup shaped collar, tapering to parallel sided shape, medium density, sterile spikelet attitude is parallel to weakly divergent, glume and awn of median spikelet is longer than grain
FIRST SEGMENT OF RACHIS: weak to medium curvature
LEMMA AWNS: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of tips, longer than length of spike, rough spiculations on margins

KERNEL: whitish aleurone layer, long rachilla hairs, husk present, absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration of nerves of lemma, medium degree of spiculation of inner lateral nerves of dorsal side of lemma, glabrous ventral furrow, clasping disposition of lodicules, horseshoe shape basal marking

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good to very good malting quality

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Net Blotch spot-form (Pyrenophora teres); moderately resistant to Covered Smut (Ustilago hordei), Fusarium Head Blight (Fusarium graminearum), False Loose Smut (Ustilago nigra), Spot Blotch (Cochliobolus sativus) and Stem Rust (Puccinia graminis); moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Net Blotch net-form (Pyrenophora teres); susceptible to Common Root Rot (Cochliobolus sativus), True Loose Smut (Ustilago nuda), Scald (Rhynchosporium secalis), Septoria Speckled Leaf Blotch (Septoria passerinii) and Barley Yellow Dwarf virus

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Goldman' (experimental designations TR10214 and BM0270D-214-0) was developed from the cross between TR04282 and 'Newdale' in the fall of 2002 at the Brandon Research and Development Centre in Brandon, Manitoba. The F1 seeds were grown in the growth chamber and doubled haploids were produced using an Isolated Microspore Culture method. Of the 261 double haploid plants produced, one line, BM0270D-214-0, was transplanted in the greenhouse in January 2004 and then grown as a bulk increase in a winter nursery in Leeston, New Zealand. In 2005, BM0270D-214-0 was planted in the field and in an irrigated nursery in Brandon. Field plants were selected based on height, maturity, lodging resistance, general appearance and disease reaction with spot blotch whereas the plants grown in the irrigated nursery were evaluated for Fusarium head blight reaction. In 2006, BM0270D-214-0 was grown as a single plot in a preliminary yield test with repeated checks in Brandon. Additional traits such as heading date, kernel characteristics, kernel quality and disease reactions were evaluated. BM0270D-214-0 was advanced in 2007 to a replicated preliminary yield test in Brandon where it was also evaluated for malting qualities and for additional seedling disease reactions. It was then evaluated in 2008 in an advanced yield trial in 5 locations across western Canada. It was entered into the Western Cooperative Two-row Barley Registration Trial as TR10214 in 2010. In 2011-2012, TR10214 was evaluated in the Collaborative Malting Barley Trials.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC Goldman' were conducted during the 2015 and 2017 growing seasons. Plots consisted of 6 rows with a row length of 4 metres and a row spacing of 18 cm. Plots were spaced 46 cm apart. There were 4 replicates arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 40 measurements per plant or parts of plants per variety except for the thousand kernel weight with one sample per replicate per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
