Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Leader' and 'Selena'

Summary: At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is low for 'Corzo' whereas it is medium to high for 'Leader'. The anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles for 'Corzo' is of weak intensity whereas it is of strong intensity for the reference varieties. The flag leaves of 'Corzo' are longer and wider that those of 'Selena'. At the beginning of anthesis, the intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the tips of the lemma awns of 'Corzo' is very weak to weak whereas it is medium to strong on 'Selena'. The anthocyanin colouration of the nerves of the lemma of the kernel is of medium intensity for 'Corzo' whereas it is absent or very weak for 'Leader'. At the beginning of ripening, the plant height, which includes the awns, of 'Corzo' is taller than that of 'Selena'. The first segment of the rachis of 'Corzo' is medium length whereas it is short for 'Selena'. The sterile spikelet attitude is parallel to weakly divergent for 'Corzo' whereas it is divergent for 'Selena' and 'Leader'.

Description:

YOUNG PLANT: semi-erect to semi-prostrate growth habit at tillering, absent or very sparse pubescence on lower leaf sheath.
PLANT: two row, spring barley, low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, mid-season spike emergence.

FLAG LEAF (AT BOOTING): sparse pubescence on blade.
FLAG LEAF SHEATH: strong glaucosity, sparse pubescence.
AURICLES: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence on margins.

SPIKE: weak glaucosity, semi-erect to horizontal, parallel sided shape, medium compactness, sterile spikelet attitude is parallel to weakly divergent, glume and awn of the median spikelet are equal to length of grain.
LEMMA AWNS: longer than length of spike, very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, rough spiculations on margins.
FIRST SEGMENT OF RACHIS: medium length, weak to medium curvature.

KERNEL: long rachilla hairs, husk present, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of nerves of lemma, hairiness of ventral furrow absent.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Corzo' (experimental designations C2M16111 and CFO1513) originated from a cross between 25CFQ.01.346 and the variety 'Leader' conducted in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, in 2010. Selections were made at the F1 to F5 generations grown in Saint-Hyacinthe and in a winter nursery in Gorbea, Chile, for two generations. In 2012, 'Corzo' resulted from the selection of one plant at the F5 generation based on yield, lodging resistance, maturity, plant height, seed quality and disease resistance. The establishment of seed took place at the F11 generation.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Corzo' were conducted at the La Coop fédérée crop production research farm in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, during the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons. The trials were planted in a RCB design with 3 replicates per variety in 2018 and 4 replicates per variety in 2019. Each plot consisted of 7 rows 5 metres long with a row spacing of 0.18 metre. The planting density was approximately 325 seeds per square metre. The measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 24 measurements per variety in 2018 and 20 measurements per variety in 2019. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
