Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Madawaska', 'AAC Synergy' and 'Champion'

Summary: At booting, 'AS Lafleur' has a medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves while ‘AAC Synergy' has a low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. The flag leaf auricles of 'AS Lafleur' have a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration while the flag leaf auricles of ‘AAC Synergy' have an absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration and those of ‘Champion' have an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The spike of 'AS Lafleur' emerges earlier than those of ‘AAC Synergy' and ‘Champion'. The flag leaf of 'AS Lafleur' is shorter and narrower than the flag leaf of ‘Champion' and narrower than that of ‘AAC Synergy'. At the beginning of anthesis, the lemma awn tips of 'AS Lafleur' have a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration while those of ‘AAC Madawaska' and ‘Champion' have an absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. At the end of anthesis, the spike of 'AS Lafleur' has weak glaucosity while those of ‘AAC Synergy' and ‘Champion' have a medium degree of glaucosity. At the early to soft dough stage, the nerves of the lemma on the kernel of 'AS Lafleur' have an absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration while those of ‘Champion' have a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. When the kernel is fully developed and beginning to ripen, the plants, which includes the awns, of 'AS Lafleur' are shorter than those of ‘AAC Madawaska'. Excluding the awns, the spike of ‘AS Lafleur' is shorter than that of ‘AAC Synergy'. The kernel weight of ‘AS Lafleur' is less than the kernel weight of ‘AAC Madawaska' and ‘AAC Synergy'.

Description:

YOUNG PLANT: intermediate growth habit at tillering, absent or very sparse to sparse pubescence on lower leaf sheaths
PLANT: two row, spring feed barley, medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, early spike emergence

FLAG LEAF AURICLES: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration at beginning of anthesis

SPIKE: weak glaucosity at end of anthesis, horizontal attitude, v- shaped collar, parallel shape, medium density, fully developed sterile spikelets, parallel to weakly divergent sterile spikelet attitude, glume and awn of the median spikelet are equal relative to the grain length

LEMMA AWNS: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of tips, longer than spike, rough spiculations on margins
FIRST SEGMENT OF RACHIS: very short, absent or very weak to weak curvature

KERNEL: absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of nerves of the lemma, long rachilla hairs, husk present, very weak spiculation of inner lateral nerves of dorsal side of lemma, hairless ventral furrow

Origin & Breeding History: ‘AS Lafleur' (experimental designation CLO10-018.138) originated from a cross conducted between two spring barley varieties ‘Pandora' and ‘IC003' in 2010 at Céréla Inc. in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. The variety was advanced to the F4 generation selecting the heaviest seed from each generation. F4 spikes were selected based on disease resistance and lodging resistance where one line was designated CLO10-018.138 and evaluated from 2015 to 2018 based on grain yield, test weight, thousand kernel weight, lodging resistance and resistance to fusarium head blight. CLO10-018.138 was entered in the trials conducted by the Quebec Recommending Committee for Cereal from 2019 to 2021. Breeder seed was established from 89 F10 head rows in 2021.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘AS Lafleur' were conducted at Céréla Inc. in St. Hugues, Quebec during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. There were 2 replicates per variety arranged in an RCB design. Plots were 4.75 square metres consisting of 5 rows, each row being 5 metres long, with 0.19 metres inter-row spacing. The seeding density was 375 seeds per square metre resulting in approximately 3500 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
