Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Bell', 'AAC Connect' and 'Island'

Summary: At booting, 'AS Manon' has a low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves while ‘Island' has a medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. The spike of 'AS Manon' emerges earlier that those of ‘AAC Bell' and ‘AAC Connect'. The flag leaf of 'AS Manon' is shorter and narrower than the flag leaf of ‘AAC Connect'. At the early to soft dough stage, the nerves of the lemma on the kernel of 'AS Manon' have a weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration while those of ‘AAC Bell' have a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. When the kernel is fully developed and beginning to ripen, the plants, which includes the awns, of 'AS Manon' are taller than those of ‘AAC Connect'. Excluding the awns, the spike of 'AS Manon' is shorter than the spike of ‘AAC Connect'. The kernel weight of ‘AS Manon' is less than the kernel weight of ‘AAC Connect'.

Description:

YOUNG PLANT: intermediate growth habit at tillering, absent or very sparse to sparse pubescence on lower leaf sheaths
PLANT: two row, spring feed barley, low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, early to mid-season spike emergence

FLAG LEAF SHEATH: medium to strong glaucosity
AURICLES: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration at beginning of anthesis

SPIKE: medium glaucosity at end of anthesis, horizontal attitude, v- shaped collar, slightly tapering shape, medium density, fully developed sterile spikelets, parallel sterile spikelet attitude
LEMMA AWNS: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of tips, longer than spike, rough spiculations on margins
FIRST SEGMENT OF RACHIS: short to medium length, weak to medium degree of curvature

KERNEL: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of nerves of the lemma, short rachilla hairs, husk present, absent or very weak to weak spiculation of inner lateral nerves of dorsal side of lemma, hairless ventral furrow

Origin & Breeding History: ‘AS Manon' (experimental designation CLO11-011.032) originated from a cross conducted between two spring barley varieties ‘SO10-18A' and ‘Leader' in 2011 at Céréla Inc. in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. The variety was advanced to the F4 generation selecting the heaviest seed from each generation. F5 plants were selected based on disease resistance and lodging resistance where one line was designated CLO11-011.032 and evaluated from 2017 to 2019 based on grain yield, test weight, thousand kernel weight, lodging resistance and resistance to fusarium head blight. CLO11-011.032 was entered in the trials conducted by the Quebec Recommending Committee for Cereal from 2020 to 2022. Breeder seed was established from 68 F10 head rows in 2022.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘AS Manon' were conducted at Céréla Inc. in St. Hugues, Quebec during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. There were 2 replicates per variety arranged in an RCB design. Plots were 4.75 square metres consisting of 5 rows, each 5 metres long, with 0.19 metres inter row spacing. The seeding density was 375 seeds per square metre resulting in approximately 3500 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
