Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Rattan' and 'CDC Valdres'
Summary: At booting, the flag leaf of CDC Henrick' is longer than that of CDC Rattan'. The flag leaf auricles of CDC Henrick' have a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas those of CDC Rattan' have a very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The spike of CDC Henrick' has an erect attitude whereas that of CDC Rattan' has a semi-erect to horizontal attitude and that of CDC Valdres' has a semi-erect attitude. At ripening, the plants, including the awns, of CDC Henrick' are shorter than the plants of CDC Valdres'. The spike, excluding the awns, of CDC Henrick' is shorter than that of both reference varieties.
Description:
YOUNG PLANT: semi-erect to intermediate growth habit at tillering, absent or very sparse pubescence on the lower leaf sheaths
PLANT: two row, spring type, food barley, high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves
FLAG LEAF (AT BOOTING): very weak pubescence on blade
FLAG LEAF SHEATH: strong glaucosity, very weak pubescence
AURICLES: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence on margins
SPIKE: mid-season emergence, medium glaucosity, erect attitude, tapering shape, lax to medium density, parallel to weakly divergent to divergent sterile spikelet attitude, glume and awn of median spikelet are equal to length of grain
LEMMA AWNS: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the tips, longer than length of spike, rough spiculations on margins
FIRST SEGMENT OF RACHIS: short, absent or very weak to weak curvature
KERNEL: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of nerves of the lemma at the end of anthesis, whitish aleurone layer, short rachilla hairs, husk absent, medium spiculation of inner lateral nerves of dorsal side of lemma, absent hairiness of ventral furrow, clasping disposition of lodicules, horseshoe to incomplete horseshoe shape of basal markings, short to medium length, narrow to medium width
AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good resistance to lodging, good resistance to shattering, good tolerance to straw breakage, fair to good tolerance to drought
Origin & Breeding History: CDC Henrick' (experimental designations HB20349' and SH170132') originated from a cross conducted between the breeding lines HB12320' and 2Ab09-X06F058HL-30' made under a glass greenhouse at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in the summer of 2013. Between 2013 and 2016, further breeding work (F1 to F5) was carried out using a modified bulk breeding method, with work split between Saskatoon and a winter nursery in New Zealand. Further yield tests were conducted from 2017 to 2021. Selection criteria was based on seed characteristics, plant height, lodging resistance, threshability, yield and beta-glucan content. Breeder seed of CDC Henrick' was produced during the 2022 growing season.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for CDC Henrick' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. There were 4 replicates per variety arranged in an RCB design for each growing season. Plots were 4.5 square metres and consisted of 5 rows with a row length of 3.7 metres with 0.2 metres between rows. The seeding density was 215 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 24 measurements per variety per year. The mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
