Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Clear' and 'AAC Synergy'

Summary: At booting, ‘CDC Pristine' has a low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves whereas ‘CDC Clear' has a high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. The flag leaf of ‘CDC Armstrong' is longer than that of ‘AAC Synergy' and narrower than that of ‘CDC Clear'. The spike attitude of ‘CDC Pristine' is semi-erect whereas the spike of ‘CDC Clear' is horizontal. At ripening, the plants, including the awns, of ‘CDC Pristine' are shorter than the plants of ‘CDC Clear'. The spike, excluding the awns, of ‘CDC Pristine' is shorter than that of ‘CDC Clear' and longer than that of ‘AAC Synergy'.

Description:

YOUNG PLANT: semi-erect to intermediate growth habit at tillering, absent or very sparse pubescence on the lower leaf sheaths

PLANT: two row, spring type, malting barley, low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves

FLAG LEAF (AT BOOTING): very weak pubescence on blade
FLAG LEAF SHEATH: strong glaucosity, very weak pubescence
AURICLES: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence on margins

SPIKE: mid-season to late emergence, strong glaucosity, semi-erect attitude, parallel shape, lax density, parallel to weakly divergent to divergent sterile spikelet attitude, glume and awn of median spikelet are equal to length of grain

LEMMA AWNS: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the tips, longer than length of spike, rough spiculations on margins
FIRST SEGMENT OF RACHIS: medium length, medium degree of curvature

KERNEL: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of nerves of the lemma at the end of anthesis, whitish aleurone layer, long rachilla hairs, husk absent, medium spiculation of inner lateral nerves of dorsal side of lemma, absent hairiness of ventral furrow, clasping disposition of lodicules, horseshoe and incomplete horseshoe shape of basal markings, short to medium length, narrow to medium width

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: poor to fair resistance to lodging, good resistance to shattering, good tolerance to straw breakage, fair to good tolerance to drought, good malting quality

Origin & Breeding History: ‘CDC Pristine' (experimental designations ‘HB21355' and ‘SH180307') originated from a cross conducted between the breeding lines ‘HB14326' and ‘SH120433' made under a glass greenhouse at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in the summer of 2014. Between 2014 and 2017, further breeding work (F1 to F5) was carried out using a modified bulk breeding method, with work split between Saskatoon and a winter nursery in New Zealand. Further yield tests were conducted from 2018 to 2022. Selection criteria was based on seed characteristics, plant height, lodging resistance, threshability, yield, protein content, wort beta-glucan content, and viscosity. Breeder seed of ‘CDC Armstrong' was produced during the 2023 growing season.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘CDC Pristine' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. There were 4 replicates per variety arranged in an RCB design for each growing season. Plots were 4.5 square metres and consisted of 5 rows with a row length of 3.7 metres and 0.2 metres spacing between rows. The seeding density was 215 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 24 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
