Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Carman Black', 'CDC Jet' and 'CDC Blackcomb'
Summary: The terminal leaflet of 'CDC Blackstrap' is small whereas that of 'Carman Black' is medium size, that of 'CDC Jet' is large and that of 'CDC Blackcomb' is medium large to large. The terminal leaflet shape of 'CDC Blackstrap' is quadrangular whereas that of 'CDC Jet' is triangular. 'CDC Blackstrap' flowers very early whereas 'Carman Black' and 'CDC Jet' both flower early. The pods of 'CDC Blackstrap' are shorter than those of the reference varieties. The seed weight of 'CDC Blackstrap' is high whereas it is low to medium for 'CDC Blackcomb'.
Description:
PLANT: dwarf growth type, indeterminate growth habit
LEAF: dark green, weak rugosity
TERMINAL LEAFLET: small, quadrangular shape, long tip
FLOWER: flowers very early, predominantly in foliage at full flowering, violet standard and wings
POD: ovate in cross section, green ground colour with 25 percent showing secondary weak to dense violet flecks, stringiness of ventral suture present, absent or very weak degree of concave curvature, acute to truncate distal part, very weak curvature of beak, smooth or slightly rough texture of surface, moderate constrictions at dry stage
SEED: high seed weight, rectangular shape in longitudinal section, narrow elliptic to medium elliptic shape in cross-section, medium to broad in cross-section, medium to long, single coloured, black
Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Blackstrap', which was tested as 2921-14, was developed at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from the cross (L95-A035 // CDC Rio / Expresso-25) / (CDC Jet // CDC Rio / OAC 95-4) with the final cross made in 2004. It was derived through bulk selection from a single F2 plant and was selected over several generations for days to flower, days to maturity, yield, plant height, resistance to lodging, pod clearance seed weight and black seed colour at maturity. Single plants were selected in the F6 generation and bulked progeny were grown in plots for three generations while selecting for uniformity of days to maturity, plant type, seed size and coat colour. From 2010 to 2012, 'CDC Blackstrap' was tested in the Short Season Narrow Row Bean Cooperative test.
Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'CDC Blackstrap' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons. The trials were conducted using a RCB design containing 2 replicates per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 47 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
