Summary: The tip of the terminal leaflet of 'CDC Sunburst' is of medium length while that of 'AAC Y012' and 'AAC Y015' is long. The plants of 'CDC Sunburst' flower early to mid-season while the plants of 'CDC Sol' flower mid to late season. Excluding the beak, the pod of 'CDC Sunburst' is shorter than that of 'AAC Y015'. The pod curvature of 'CDC Sunburst' is weak whereas it is absent or very weak for 'CDC Sol' and 'AAC Y015' and absent or very weak to weak for 'AAC Y012'. The seed weight of 'CDC Sunburst' is greater than that of 'AAC Y012' and 'AAC Y015'. The plants of 'CDC Sunburst' mature earlier than the plants of 'CDC Sol' and 'AAC Y015'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Sunburst' (experimental designation 4510-3-1) was developed at the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It was derived from an F2 single plant selection from a cross between 3215-2 and 3843-4F2 made in July 2009. Screening and selections were done from the F3 to F8 generations. Selections were based on days to flower, days to maturity, yield, plant height, lodging, pod clearance, seed weight, disease resistance and canning traits. In the F6 generation, single plants were selected and the resulting progeny were grown in plots for two generations with selection for uniformity, days to maturity, plant type and seed size. In the F9 generation, 51 sub-lines were used to establish breeder seed. 'CDC Sunburst' was evaluated in Short Season Narrow Row Dry Bean Cooperative Registration Trials for two years; 2016 and 2017.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC Sunburst' were conducted in the summer of 2018 and 2019 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Plots consisted of 3 rows with a row spacing of 30 cm and a row length of 3.66 metres. Plants within a row were spaced at 48 seeds per square metre. There were 2 replicates. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except seed weight, which was based on 8 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student`s t-test.
