Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Etna' and 'OAC Navabi'

Summary: The branches of ‘Stavros' have an erect attitude while the branches of ‘Etna' have an intermediate attitude. The plants of ‘Stavros' are taller than those of the reference varieties. At full flowering, the terminal leaflet of ‘Stavros' is medium in size while those of the reference varieties are large. The flower standard of ‘Stavros' is pink while it is violet for ‘OAC Navabi'. The flower wing of ‘Stavros' is pinkish white while it is pink for ‘OAC Navabi'. Excluding the beak, the pod of ‘Stavros' is shorter than the pod of ‘Etna'. The seed weight of ‘Stavros' is less than those of the reference varieties.

Description:

PLANT: dwarf growth type, determinate growth type, guides absent, erect attitude of branches

LEAF: medium green on upper side
TERMINAL LEAFLET: medium sized, quadrangular shape, medium length tip

FLOWERING TIME: early season
FLOWER: pink standard, pinkish white wing

POD: ovate shape in cross-section, green ground colour, pink secondary colour, stringiness of ventral suture present, absent or very weak degree of curvature, acute to truncate shaped distal part excluding the beak, medium length beak, weak curvature of beak

SEED: cranberry type, low seed weight, circular to elliptic-shaped in longitudinal section, medium elliptic shape in cross-section, medium width in cross-section, medium length
SEED COAT: two colours, beige, red spotted secondary colour on entire grain

Origin & Breeding History: ‘Stavros' (experimental designation ACUG 19-NDCI) originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2012 at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario between the lines CBX9151ND and ACUG10-C1. The new variety was selected as an F5:6 population in 2015 based on pod number, plant architecture, maturity and yield. After 3 years of testing, the line was designated ACUG 19-NDCI and entered into the Variety Registration trials in 2018 and 2019. Breeder seed was established at the F9 generation in 2022.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘Stavros' were conducted during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons at the University of Guleph Elora Crop Research Station in Elora, Ontario. The trial was conducted using a RCB design containing 2 replicates per variety. Each replicate consisted of 2 rows spaced 60 cm apart, with a row length of 5.5 metres. Each plot was 7.15 metres squared resulting in a total of approximately 400 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 40 measurements per variety per year except for seed weight which was based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student`s t-test.
