Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Rogue' and 'AAC Shock'

Summary: The plants of ‘OAC Seal' have a semi-determinate growth type while the plants of the reference varieties have an indeterminate growth type. The branches of ‘OAC Seal' have an erect attitude while the branches of ‘AAC Shock' have a semi-erect attitude. The plants of ‘OAC Seal' flower later than those of ‘AAC Shock'. At full flowering, the upper side of the leaf of ‘OAC Seal' is dark green while those of the reference varieties are medium green. Excluding the beak, the pod of ‘OAC Seal' is shorter than that of ‘Rogue'. The seed weight of ‘OAC Seal' is greater than that of ‘Rogue'.

Description:

PLANT: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of hypocotyl, dwarf growth type, semi-determinate growth type, erect attitude of branches

LEAF: dark green on upper side
TERMINAL LEAFLET: small, quadrangular shape, medium length tip

FLOWERING TIME: mid-season
FLOWER: white standard, white wing

POD: ovate shape in cross-section, green ground colour, secondary colour absent, stringiness of ventral suture present, absent or very weak degree of curvature, acute to truncate shaped distal part excluding the beak, medium length beak, weak curvature of beak

SEED: navy type, medium seed weight, circular to elliptic shaped in longitudinal section, narrow to medium elliptic shape in cross-section, narrow to medium width in cross-section, short
SEED COAT: white, no secondary colour

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to anthracnose race 73 (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum); moderately resistant to common bacterial blight (Xanthomonas campestris pv phaseoli)

Origin & Breeding History: ‘OAC Seal' (experimental designation ACUG 19-3) originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2013 at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario between the variety ‘Fathom' and the line GF6-11-8. The variety was advanced with an F5 line selected in 2015 based on high pod number, plant architecture and maturity. After 3 years of testing, the line was designated ACUG 19-3 and entered into the Variety Registration trials in 2019 and 2020. Breeder seed was established at the F9 generation in 2022.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘OAC Seal' were conducted during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons at the University of Guleph Elora Crop Research Station in Elora, Ontario. The trial was conducted using a RCB design containing 2 replicates per variety. Each replicate consisted of 2 rows spaced 60cm apart, with a row length of 5.5 metres. Each plot was 7.15 metres squared resulting in a total of approximately 400 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on 40 measurements per variety per year except for seed weight which was based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student`s t-test. Disease ratings were provided through the Disease Evaluation team of the Ontario Pulse Crop Committee.
