SEED COAT: black
Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Turtle Mountain' (experimental designation 5501CBB-3-2) originated from a three way cross conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The initial cross between the variety 'CDC Blackstrap' and the line AG11155 was conducted in 2013 with a subsequent backcross to 'CDC Blackstrap' conducted in 2014. A single F2 plant selection was made and the variety was advanced to the F6 generation based on days to flower, days to maturity, yield, plant height, resistance to lodging, pod clearance, seed weight, disease resistance and canning traits. Single F6 plants were selected with F7 and F8 selections made based on days to maturity, plant type, presence of the common bacterial blight marker SU9I, anthracnose tolerance and seed size. Nine F9 sublines were used to establish breeder seed in 2022.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'CDC Turtle Mountain' was conducted during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons at the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The trial was conducted using a RCB design containing 2 replicates per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.5 metres. Each plot was 3.35 metres squared resulting in a total of approximately 320 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety except for seed weight which was based on 4 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
