Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Dynasty' and 'Gallantry'

Summary: The plants of ‘OAC Tong' have an indeterminate growth type while those of the reference varieties have a determinate growth type. The terminal leaflet of ‘OAC Tong' is small while those of the reference varieties are large. The flower standard and wing of ‘OAC Tong' are pink while those of ‘Gallantry' are white. Stringiness of the ventral suture is absent on the pod of ‘OAC Tong' while it is present on the pod of ‘Gallantry'. The beak on the pod of 'OAC Tong' is longer than those of the reference varieties. The seed weight of 'OAC Tong' is greater than that of ‘Gallantry'. The plants of ‘OAC Tong' flower later than those of the reference varieties.

Description:

PLANT: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of hypocotyl, dwarf growth type, indeterminate growth type

LEAF: medium green on upper side
TERMINAL LEAFLET: small

FLOWERING TIME: mid-season
FLOWER: pink standard, pink wing
POD: ovate shape in cross-section, long, green ground colour, secondary colour absent, stringiness of ventral suture absent, absent or very weak curvature, long beak

SEED: red kidney type, high seed weight, kidney-shaped in longitudinal section, weak curvature, medium elliptic shape in cross-section, medium width in cross-section, long
SEED COAT: one colour, red

DISEASE REACTIONS: moderately resistant to anthracnose race 73 (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum); susceptible to common bacterial blight (Xanthomonas campestris pv phaseoli)

Origin & Breeding History: 'OAC Tong' (experimental designation OAC 20-D1) originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2014 at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario between the lines ACUG 12-D1 and W12HR697. The variety was advanced with single F5 plants selected in 2016 based on high pod number, plant architecture and maturity. An F6 line, evaluated in preliminary and advanced yield trials respectively in 2018 and 2019, was designated OAC 20-D1 and entered in the Variety Registration Trials in 2020 and 2021. Breeder seed was established at the F9 generation in 2023.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'OAC Tong' were conducted during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons at the University of Guleph Elora Crop Research Station in Elora, Ontario. The trial included 2 replicates with the plots arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 2 rows, both 5.5 metres in length and spaced 60cm apart. The seeding density resulted in approximately 400 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 40 measurements per variety per year except for seed weight which was based on a minimum of 8 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. Disease ratings were provided through the Disease Evaluation team of the Ontario Pulse Crop Committee.
