Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Rogue' and 'AAC Shock'

Summary: The plants of 'Steam' are taller than those of ‘Rogue'. Stringiness of the ventral suture is present on the pod of ‘Steam' while it is absent on the pod of ‘Rogue'. The plants of 'Steam' mature later than those of ‘AAC Shock'. The seed weight of 'Steam' is greater than the seed weight of 'Rogue' and less than that of ‘AAC Shock'.

Description:

PLANT: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of hypocotyl, dwarf growth type, indeterminate growth type

LEAF: medium green on upper side

FLOWERING TIME: early
FLOWER: white standard, white wing
POD: ovate shape in cross-section, medium length, green ground colour, secondary colour absent, stringiness of ventral suture absent, weak degree of curvature, medium length beak, weak curvature of beak

SEED: navy type, medium seed weight, circular to elliptic shaped in longitudinal section, medium elliptic shape in cross-section, narrow in cross-section, short
SEED COAT: white, no secondary colour

DISEASE REACTIONS: susceptible to anthracnose race 73 (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum); moderately resistant to common bacterial blight (Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli)

Origin & Breeding History: 'Steam' (experimental designation OAC 20-7) originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2014 at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario between the lines ACUG 13-2 and ACUG 13-3. The variety was advanced with an F5 line selected in 2016 based on high pod number, plant architecture and maturity. After 2 years of testing, the line was designated OAC 20-7 and entered into the Variety Registration trials in 2020 and 2021. Breeder seed was established at the F9 generation in 2023.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Steam' were conducted during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons at the University of Guleph Elora Crop Research Station in Elora, Ontario. The trial included 2 replicates with the plots arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 2 rows, both 5.5 metres in length and spaced 60cm apart. The seeding density resulted in approximately 400 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 40 measurements per variety per year except for seed weight which was based on a minimum of 8 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. Disease ratings were provided through the Disease Evaluation team of the Ontario Pulse Crop Committee.
