Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'OAC Vortex' and 'Zorro'

Summary: The plants of ‘Umbra' are taller than those of ‘Zorro'. At full flowering, the upper side of the leaf of ‘Umbra' is dark to very dark green while that of ‘OAC Vortex' is medium green and that of ‘Zorro' is medium to dark green. The plants of ‘Umbra' flower later than those of the reference varieties. Stringiness of the ventral suture is present on the pod of ‘Umbra' while it is absent on the pods of the reference varieties. The pod of ‘Umbra' has absent or very weak curvature while the pod of ‘OAC Vortex' has a weak concave curvature. The beak on the pod of 'Umbra' is longer than that of ‘OAC Vortex'. The seed weight of 'Umbra' is less than that of ‘OAC Vortex' and greater than that of ‘Zorro'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Umbra' (experimental designation OAC 20-B5) originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2014 at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario between the variety ‘Zorro' and the line W11WE194. The variety was advanced with single F5 plants selected in 2016 based on high pod number, plant architecture and maturity. An F6 line, evaluated in preliminary and advanced yield trials in 2018 and 2019 was designated OAC 20-B5 and entered in the Variety Registration Trials in 2020 and 2021. Breeder seed was established at the F9 generation in 2023.
