The pod of Grace' is medium brown while that of Erimo Shozu' is light brown. The pod of Grace' has fewer seeds than the pod of Kitaroman'.
Description:
PLANT: bushy growth type, medium number of branches, matures mid-season
STEM: absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration, ranging between medium to long and long, medium to many nodes
LEAF: medium to dark green on upper side
TERMINAL LEAFLET: very low length to width ratio, absent or very shallow to shallow lobing
FLOWERING TIME: mid-season

Origin & Breeding History: 'Grace' (experimental designation BT 252) originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2006 in Hokkido, Japan between the elite varieties Erimo-Shozu' and Shumari'. The variety was advanced in Japan based on brown stem rot resistance, growth habit, seed quality, cold tolerance and processing qualities with an F9 line designated BT252 in 2012. Breeder seed was established at the F12 generation in 2017.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Grace' were conducted during the 2024 and 2025 growing seasons in Winkler, Manitoba. The trial included 3 replicates arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 2 rows, 2 metres in length and spaced 60cm apart. The seeding density resulted in a minimum of 138 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 60 measurements per variety per year except for seed weight which was based on 3 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
