Description:
'Betulia Light' is an elatior begonia with short height and narrow to medium width. There are a few basal shoots that have many to very many branches with thin to medium stems. The leaves are dark green in colour on the upper side and light green on the lower surface. The leaf blade is narrow in width and the midrib is short in length. Glossiness of the leaves on the lower surface is strong. The base of the leaf blade is open to closed. The apex of the leaf blade is narrow to medium in width and acute in shape. The bi-serrate incisions on the margins of the leaf blade are shallow. Undulation of the margin is weak. The bracts are very small to small in size, green in colour and have an acute shaped apex.
'Betulia Light' produces an inflorescence which is medium in density. The flowers are a double type but sometimes single with a medium diameter, and very few to few petals. The petal size changes gradually but sometimes abruptly from the outer petals to the inner petals. Colour of the outer petals of the flower is white with light yellow brown (margin and middle upper side-RHS 155D with base RHS 55C, middle lower side RHS 159D) and of the inner petals white with light red pink (margin upper side-RHS 155D, middle upper side-RHS 155D with base RHS 55C, middle lower side-RHS 49D). Incisions on the petal margins is present. Undulation of the petal margins is absent. The time of beginning of flowering for 'Betulia Light' is very late both after shortday treatment and while under natural long days.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Betulia Light' was discovered in Ermelo, The Netherlands in February 2002 as a naturally occurring whole plant mutation of Begonia x hiemalis cultivar 'Betulia'. 'Betulia Light' was observed as a single flowering plant within a population of flowering plants of the parent cultivar 'Betulia'. It was selected based on its flower colour.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, CPVO reference number 2001/1770, application number BGE 524, grant number 10635, purchased from the Bundessortenamt, Hannover, Germany. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Prüfstelle Hannover, Germany in 2001.
