Variety Description

Description:

'Binos Soft Pink' is an elatior begonia with a medium to late flowering time under natural long days, and has an early to medium flowering time after short-day treatment. It has short foliage and a medium to broad plant width. It has few basal shoots with many branches per shoot, and a medium to thick internode below the first inflorescence. The leaf upper side is dark green, and the lower side light green with strong glossiness. The leaf blade is of medium width, with a medium midrib length, open to wide-open base and an acute apex of narrow to medium width. The leaf blade margin has bi-serrate shallow incisions with weak undulation.

The inflorescence of 'Binos Soft Pink' is dense to very dense, and the bracts are large and green with an acute apex. The flowers are double and very large in diameter, with a low to medium number of petals and a gradual change of petal size. For the outer petal, the margin of the upper side is orange pink (RHS 179D), the middle part of the upper side is light red pink (RHS 36A), and the middle part of the lower side is orange pink (RHS 29C). For the inner petal, the margin of the upper side is orange pink (RHS 29C), the middle of the upper side is light red pink (RHS 38D), and the middle of the lower side is light red pink (RHS 38C). The petals have incisions, and no undulation.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Binos Soft Pink' was discovered by the breeder as a naturally occurring whole plant mutation of Begonia ×hiemalis cultivar 'Binos' in September 2002 in Emerlo, The Netherlands. It was selected for based on flower colour.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, CPVO reference number 20032199, application number BGE 599, grant number 14318, purchased from the CPVO, Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Hannover, Germany, in 2004.
