Description:
'Betulia Bright Pink' is an elatior begonia with a medium to late flowering time under natural long days, and has a medium time to flowering after short-day treatment. It has short foliage and a medium plant width. It has very few to few basal shoots with many branches per shoot, and a very thin to thin internode below the first inflorescence. The leaf upper side is medium green and the lower side light green with strong glossiness. The leaf blade width is narrow, with a short midrib, a closed to open base and an acute apex of narrow to medium width. The leaf blade margin has bi-crenate shallow to medium incisions with weak undulation.
The inflorescence of 'Betulia Bright Pink' is medium to dense, and the bracts are small, green and red, with an acute apex. The flowers are single and small in diameter, with a gradual change of petal size. For the outer petal, the margin of the upper side is purple red (RHS N057B), the middle of the upper side is purple red (RHS N057A), and the middle of the lower side is red pink (RHS 52B). The upper side and the lower side of the inner petal is purple red (RHS N057A). The petals have incisions, and no undulation.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Betulia Bright Pink' was discovered by the breeder as a naturally occurring whole plant mutation of Begonia ×hiemalis cultivar 'Betulia Pink' in May 2001 in Emerlo, The Netherlands. It was selected for based on flower colour.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, CPVO reference number 2003/2200, application number BGE 597, grant number 14523, purchased from the CPVO, Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Hannover, Germany, in 2004.
