Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Liberty' and 'Elliott'

Summary: The leaf of 'Last Call' is longer than the leaf of 'Liberty' and shorter than the leaf of 'Elliott'. The margin of the leaf is entire for 'Last Call' and is serrate for 'Liberty'. 'Last Call' has a longer inflorescence than 'Liberty'. The corolla tube is large for 'Last Call' whereas it is medium sized for both reference varieties. The fruit is medium in size for 'Last Call' whereas the fruit is large for 'Liberty'. The sepal on the fruit of 'Last Call' is incurving with a semi-erect attitude whereas the sepal for 'Elliott' is reflexed with an erect attitude. The fruit of 'Last Call' is medium in sweetness whereas the fruit of 'Elliott' is absent to very low to low in sweetness. Fruit ripening begins late to very late for 'Last Call' whereas fruit ripening on 'Liberty' is mid to late season.

FRUIT: medium to dense fruit cluster, light to medium intensity of green on unripe fruit, medium size, oblate shape in longitudinal section, sepals incurving with erect attitude, shallow calyx basin, medium bloom intensity, dark blue skin, firm, medium sweetness, high acidity

Origin & Breeding History: 'Last Call' arose from a cross between 'Ozarkblue' (female parent) and 'Elliot' (male parent) made in 2002, in Lowell, Oregon. From the resulting progeny, 'Last Call' was selected in 2006 for its growth habit, firmness, late maturing time, and flavour.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Last Call' were conducted by Expert Agriculture Team Ltd., in Chilliwack, British Columbia during the 2015 growing season. The plots were planted in the spring of 2014 in a randomized complete block design. Each variety consisted of 3 replicates with 3 plants per replicate for a total of 9 plants of each variety. Plants were spaced approximately 60 centimetres apart within rows and 3 metres between rows. Measurements were taken from 9 plants or parts of plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
