Varieties used for comparison: 'Draper' and 'Bluecrop'
Summary: The plants of 'Osorno' have a semi-upright growth habit whereas the plants of both 'Draper' and Bluecrop' have an upright growth habit. The leaf blade of 'Osorno' is shorter than that of both reference varieties. 'Osorno' has medium sized fruit whereas 'Bluecrop' has large fruit. The fruit of 'Osorno' has a calyx basin that is larger in diameter than that of 'Draper'.
Description:
PLANT: weak vigour, semi-upright growth habit, flowers and fruits on one-year-old shoots only, flowering begins mid-season, fruit ripening begins mid-season
ONE-YEAR-OLD SHOOT: greenish red, short to medium internode length
LEAF: medium length to width ratio, ovate shape, dark green on upper side, entire margin
FLOWER BUD: medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, early bud burst
COROLLA: cylindrical into urceolate shape
COROLLA TUBE: medium to large with ridges, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
FRUIT: medium density fruit cluster, light to medium intensity of green on unripe fruit, medium sized, round in longitudinal section, straight sepals with erect attitude, medium depth calyx basin, medium bloom intensity, medium blue skin, medium firmness, medium sweetness, low acidity
Origin & Breeding History: 'Osorno' resulted from a controlled cross between 'Draper' and 'Elliot' made in 2002 at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The resulting seed was planted in a greenhouse and 'Osorno' was selected in 2006 from 103 sibling plants. 'Osorno' was asexually propagated by softwood cuttings for further testing. Section criteria was for plant vigour, fruit size, fruit yield, fruit firmness and size of picking scar.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Osorno' was conducted by Expert Agriculture Team Ltd., in Chilliwack, British Columbia during the 2017 and 2018 growing seasons. Each variety consisted of 3 replicates with 3 plants per replicate for a total of 9 plants of each variety. Plants were spaced approximately 76 cm apart within rows and 3 metres between rows. Measurements were taken from 9 plants, or 9 parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
