Summary: The leaf blade of 'VacBri1' is smaller than the leaf blade of 'Bluecrop'. The upper side of the leaf blade of 'VicBri1' is brown purple, changing to brown purple mottled with brown green in the summer whereas the upper side of the leaf blade of 'Bluecrop' is brown green in the spring and summer. The flower of 'VacBri1' is shorter than the flower of 'Bluecrop'.

LEAF (UPPER SIDE): brown purple (RHS N186C) in spring, brown purple (RHS 187A) mottled with brown green (RHS 146A) in summer, solid brown green (RHS 146A) in late summer, dark brown (redder than RHS 200A) in autumn
FLOWERING: begins early to mid-season on one-year-old shoots only
FLOWER BUD: strong anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: urceolate shaped, absent to very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, ridges on corolla tube present
FRUIT: begins ripening mid-season on one-year-old shoots only, dense fruit cluster, medium to large, oblate shape in longitudinal cross-section, straight to reflexed sepals with erect attitude, shallow calyx basin, medium sweetness, medium acidity
FRUIT SKIN: medium intensity of bloom, black (RHS 202A) after removal of bloom
Origin & Breeding History: 'VacBri1' was discovered and developed by the breeder, Lynne Caton, in Elma, Washington, USA. It originated from a naturally occuring mutation discovered in 2008, in a liner crop of the Vaccinium corymbosum variety 'Toro'. 'VacBri1' was selected in 2009 for its dark brown purple leaf colour in the spring. It was evaluated from 2011 to 2015 for stability, uniformity, overall performance and market potential. 'VacBri1' was originally asexually reproduced by tissue culture, from stem cuttings, in Elma, Washington, USA in 2011.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'VacBri1' was conducted in a polyhouse container trial during the summer of 2016, at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 10 shrubs, each of the candidate and reference variety. Liners were started in the spring of 2014 and transplanted into 4.4 litre containers in the spring of 2015. The observations and measurements on the shoot, flower and bud characteristics, were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety throughout the growing season. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
