Variety used for comparison: 'Triple Crown'
Summary: The dormant canes of 'Cowles' have many branches whereas those of 'Triple Crown' have few. 'Cowles' has a larger flower diameter than 'Triple Crown'. The flower petals of 'Cowles' are white whereas they are pink on 'Triple Crown'. The glandular hairs on the flower pedicel of 'Cowles' are dense to very dense whereas they are of medium density on 'Triple Crown'.

DORMANT CANE: strong anthocyanin colouration, many branches, distribution of branches predominantly over the whole length of cane, rounded to angular in cross section
SPINES: absent
YOUNG SHOOT: strong anthocyanin colouration, light intensity of green colour, absent or few glandular hairs
LEAF: predominantly five leaflets per leaf, palmate type, medium intensity of green colour of upper side, weak glossiness of upper side, large stipules
TERMINAL LEAFLET: lobing absent, v-shaped in cross section, weak undulation of margin, strong blistering between veins, medium to deep bi-serrate incisions of margin

Origin & Breeding History: 'Cowles' arose from the cross 'Sonoma' (female parent) by 'Loch Ness' (male parent) conducted in 1993 in Watsonville, California, USA. Fruit and seed were collected to produce seedlings for field planting in Watsonville, California in 1994. Selection criteria included good flavour, large fruit size, fruit firmness and thornless canes.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Cowles' was conducted in Chilliwack, British Columbia during the 2014 growing season. The plots were planted in the spring of 2013 in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Each variety consisted of 3 replicates/variety with 3 plants per replicate for a total of 9 plants of each variety. Plants were spaced approximately 1.2 metres between plants in the row and spaced approximately 2.5 metres apart between rows. Measured characteristics were based on 10 measurements.
