Description:
'Masbolimket' is a boltonia variety with a narrow upright plant growth habit and high degree of branching. The stems are thick, ribbed, light green with weak to moderate anthocyanin colouration and very sparse pubescence. The leaves are simple and arranged alternately along the stem. The leaf blade is elliptic with an acute shaped apex. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green with very sparse pubescence. The margin of the lower leaves is serrate.
The inflorescence of 'Masbolimket' has compositae type flower heads that are positioned in both terminal and axillary locations on the stem. The attitude of the flowers is erect. The bracts are lanceolate. The shape of the ray florets is oblanceolate with an acute shaped apex. The ray florets are light blue violet on the upper and lower sides with streaks of darker blue violet on the upper side. The colour fades slowly as the flowers age.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Masbolimket' originated from a controlled breeding program which took place in Amherst, Massachusetts, USA from 1997 to 2000. It was the result of the open pollination of wild plants of Boltonia asteroides (L.) L'Hérit. var. latisquama (A. Gray) Cronquist. The resulting seed was germinated and the seedlings grown out in 1998. 'Masbolimket' was selected in 2000 as a single superior seedling.
Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Masbolimket' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2005 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants of each variety. The plants were grown from rooted cuttings which were transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2005. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 RHS colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
