Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Royal Joreda'

Summary: 'Royal Janette' produces a shorter plant with shorter internodes than 'Royal Joreda'. The inflorescence of 'Royal Janette' is shorter in length, smaller in diameter and denser than the inflorescence of 'Royal Joreda'. The corolla of 'Royal Janette' has a smaller diameter and a shorter corolla tube. The upper surface of the corolla lobe is a slightly lighter red colour than the corolla lobe of 'Royal Joreda'.

Description:

'Royal Janette' has stems that are round in cross section and purplish red in colour. The internodes are short in length and branching is medium. The leaves of 'Royal Janette' are medium green in colour on the upper side. The leaf blades are ovate in shape with a sharply acute shaped apex and obtuse shaped base.

'Royal Janette' has a dense inflorescence with single florets. The flower buds are medium red before opening. The lobes of the corolla have a semi-erect attitude. The diameter of the corolla tube at the base and in the middle part is medium. The length of the corolla tube is short to medium. The outer side of the corolla tube is red in colour (RHS 43D). The corolla lobes are short in length and narrow in width. The upper side of the corolla lobe is reddish-orange in colour. There is no secondary colour. The corolla lobes are broad ovate in shape with a sharply acute shaped apex. The corolla lobe is convex in cross section. Anthers and styles are absent.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Royal Janette' originated from a hybrid cross made in Roelofarendsveen, The Netherlands in 1991, with the final cross made in 1995. The parents in the final cross were two proprietary lines.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Royal Janette' were conducted in Simcoe, Ontario in June, 2000. The trials consisted of ten plants per variety grown in 15 cm pots. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
