Summary: The stem shoots of 'SB108' are shorter and thinner than those of the reference varieties. In the summer, the plants of 'SB108' are shorter than those of 'Green Beauty' and taller than those of 'Jim Stauffer'. The plants of 'SB108' are narrower than those of 'Green Beauty'. The number of branches of the plants of 'SB108' is medium to many whereas it is few to a medium for 'Green Beauty'. The leaf blade of 'SB108' is narrower than that of the reference varieties. The leaf blade shape of 'SB108' is obovate while that of the reference varieties is broad elliptic. The petiole of 'SB108' is shorter than that of 'Green Beauty' and longer than that of 'Jim Stauffer'.

LEAF BLADE: obovate shape, weakly retuse shape of apex, cuneate shape of base, entire margin, no variegation, strong contrast between new and mature growth
LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): medium glossiness, absent or very sparse pubescence, dark brown green to dark green (RHS 137A-B) mature growth, dark brown green (closest to RHS 146A) winter foliage
LEAF BLADE (LOWER SIDE): absent or very sparse pubescence, light green, medium green (closest to RHS 144A) winter foliage

Origin & Breeding History: 'SB108' was discovered in 1989 as a chance seedling of unknown parentage, in a garden in Williamsburg, Virginia. After further evaluation, 'SB108' was selected as a unique plant in 2005. The selection criteria included growth habit, leaf characteristics and disease resistance characteristics.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'SB108' was conducted as an irrigated greenhouse container trial during the summer of 2024 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 shrubs each of the candidate and the reference varieties. All shrubs were grown from 5.5 cm liners that were each planted into a 4 litre container in August 2023. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of the candidate and reference varieties on June 14, 2024. The flowering characteristics were not assessed. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
