Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Koban' and 'Mancan'
Summary: The leaf blades of 'Koto' are smaller than those of 'Koban'. 'Koto' flowers earlier than the reference varieties. The buds of the inflorescence for 'Koto' have weak anthocyanin colouration while those of 'Koban' and 'Mancan' have medium anthocyanin colouration. 'Koto' produces very well filled, black seeds whereas 'Koban' has weakly filled to well filled, dark brown to black seeds and 'Mancan' has weakly filled, brown seeds. In comparison to the reference varieties, 'Koto' matures faster and produces seeds that are shorter, wider, heavier and more dense.
Description:
'Koto' is a diploid, open-pollinated buckwheat variety. The leaf blade is arrow-shaped. Intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the flower buds is very weak to weak. 'Koto' has terminal umbels which are loose to semi-compact in density and single axillary racemes. The flower type for 'Koto' is heteromorphic.
The very well filled (rounded) seeds of 'Koto' are black with flanges.
Origin & Breeding History: In 1994, 'Koto' was selected as a single plant from a maternally selected crossing block established in 1973 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Station in Morden , Manitoba. It received selection number BM94362.3 and was evaluated under this number. Since June 8, 1995, developmental work on 'Koto' was conducted by Kade Research Ltd. in Morden, Manitoba.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Koto' were conducted in 1999 and 2000 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Station in Morden, Manitoba. Plot size was 5m long and contained 4 rows spaced 30 cm. The trials consisted of 2 replications per variety. Each plot contained a minimum of 500 plants. Unless indicated otherwise, all measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements. Results listed in the table are from 2000.
