PLANT: semi-upright growth habit, very short, broader than tall
SHOOT: brownish
STEM: strongly angular in cross-section, medium density pubescence
LEAF BLADE: narrow ovate shape, medium length, medium to broad, no variegation, dark green upper side, entire margin, absent or very sparse pubescence on upper side, pubescence present on lower side, absent or weak degree of bulging between veins
TIME OF FLOWERING: begins mid-season
INFLORESCENCE: conical shape, long to very long (excluding peduncle), medium to broad, medium density of flowers
CALYX: absent or very sparse pubescence
COROLLA LOBE: semi-erect attitude at full flowering, free arrangement, medium depth incisions of margin, inner side violet (RHS N81C), whitish color at base
COROLLA EYE: orange
COROLLA TUBE: long
Origin & Breeding History: 'SMNBDO' originated from a controlled hybrid cross conducted by the breeder, Timothy D. Wood, of Spring Meadow Nursery, Inc. in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA. The cross was made between the female parent variety 'UCONNBD610' and the male parent variety 'Pink Delight' in 2012 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA. From the resulting progeny, a single seedling was selected in 2013 based on its compact growth habit, stem thickness, short internode length, leaf appearance and texture, inflorescence size, flower colour and cold hardiness. 'SMNBDO' was first propagated by softwood cuttings in 2013 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'SMNBDO' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 20172538, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the testing station of the Groupe d'Étude et de Contrôle des Variétés et des Semences in Brion, France from 2018 to 2019. Colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
