Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Marion Fisher'
Summary: PKMH04' has taller plants with larger leaves, a larger corolla diameter and longer corolla length than 'Marion Fisher'.
Description:
'PKMH04' is a vegetatively propagated, perennial campanula variety with a compact, clump forming plant growth habit. The stems are medium green with absent to very sparse pubescence. The arrangement of the leaves is both as a basal rosette and alternately along the stems. The leaf type is simple. The leaf blade is ovate with an acute apex, a cuneate base and dentate margin. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green with no variegation. There is a petiole present.
'PKMH04' begins flowering mid-season and flowers almost continuously for a medium length of time. The sepals have an acute apex and absent to very sparse pubescence on the upper side. The inflorescence is a loose raceme. The flowers are double type and located in both terminal and axillary positions. The attitude of the flowers is drooping. The corolla has five, small lobes which are completely fused. The corolla is campanulate in shape. The inner and outer sides of the corolla are white (RHS 155A).
Origin & Breeding History: 'PKMH04' (breeder designation '928033012') was discovered in 2001 as a naturally occurring mutation from a production batch of Campanula x haylodgensis sensu stricto plants being grown in Odense, Denmark. The objective for selecting this mutation was to create new Campanula cultivars with improved form/habit and floral traits. 'PKMH04' was selected based on its sturdy, compact and freely flowering habit.
Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'PKMH04' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2005 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. The trial included ten plants of each variety. The plants were grown in 10 cm pots spaced 13 cm apart. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
