Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Calena' and 'Blaine Creek'

Summary: The leaf of 'AAC 10CS0048' is narrower than that of both reference varieties. The leaf length to width ratio of 'AAC 10CS0048' is greater than both of the reference varieties. The stem length up to the base of the infructescence of 'AAC 10CS0048' is longer than that of 'Calena'.

Description:

PLANT: inbred oilseed type, buds appear early, natural height after flowering is medium, flowers and matures mid-season

STEM: medium length, medium length to the base of infructescence, medium diameter, medium density of branches on infructescence, medium number of nodes

LEAF: medium green colour, medium density of pubescence on upper side, medium length, narrow to medium width, medium to large length to width ratio

SILICLE: medium length, medium length pedicel, pyriform shape, semi-erect attitude, medium number of seeds per silicle
SEED: 1.26 grams per 1000 seed weight at maturity

AGRONOMY: good resistance to lodging, partial resistance to downy mildew (Hyaloperonospora camelinae)

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC 10CS0048' (experimental designations 10CS0048, 06C314BE, 04C155BE) originated from plant material of unknown origin obtained from Plant Gene Resources of Canada, which was incorporated into the breeding program at the Saskatoon Research Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 2004, an isolation designated 04C155BE was sown at the AAFC Research Farm in Beaverlodge, Alberta and single plants were selected and individually harvested. From these single plant selections, 500 progeny rows, designated 06C314BE, were sown in Beaverlodge in 2006 and evaluated for general vigour, seed quality (oil and protein content) and disease incidence. Based on the agronomic and quality evaluation, reserve seed of 11 progenies selected from the 2004 selections were sown in the greenhouse in the winter of 2006 resulting in 10 plants per selected progeny. In 2009, progeny rows of the 107 plants were sown in Beaverlodge and 7 progeny were selected from these on the basis of agronomic, disease and quality evaluation. In 2010, the 10CS0048 line was bulked in isolation and harvested. In 2011 and 2012, yield trials were conducted in various locations in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Tests & Trials: Trials conducted in the summers of 2013 and 2014 at the Ag-Quest Research Station in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan were set up in a RCB Design with 2 replications per variety. Each year, plots consisted of 6 rows 6 metres in length with a spacing of 0.18 metres between rows. Measurements were taken from 60 plants or parts of plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
