Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC 10CS0048' and 'Calena'

Summary: The leaf length to width ratio of 'SES0887IOR' is smaller than that of both reference varieties. 'SES0887IOR' has a greater number of branches than 'Calena'. The silique attitude for 'SES0887IOR' is erect whereas it is semi-erect for both reference varieties.

Description:

STEM: medium length, short to medium length up to the first branch, branching on primary stem at the base, semi-erect to erect branch attitude, medium diameter, many branches

LEAF: weak undulation of margins at rosette stage, absent or very sparse pubescence on upper side, medium length, narrow to medium width, small to medium length to width ratio

FLOWER: pale yellow
SILICLE: medium length, medium compactness, pyriform shape, erect attitude
PEDICEL: short to medium length, semi-erect attitude

AGRONOMY: fair to good resistance to lodging

Origin & Breeding History: 'SES0887IOR' (experimental designation 14CS0887) originated from reciprocal crosses between 09CS0040 and 07CS0002-035 in January 2010 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Forty plants of the resulting F1 seeds, designated as 10CS0052 and 10CS0053 (total of 80), were grown in the greenhouse in Saskatoon, in March 2010 and the F2 seeds were harvested and bulked in May 2010. In the summer of 2010, F2 plants were grown in the field in a single plant pull block and 357 F2 plants harvested individually. In 2011, the F3 seeds were grown in double rows in a nursery in Saskatoon. In total, 42 F3 families were selected based on agronomic and seed quality criteria and of each selected family, 10 plants were harvested individually. In 2012, F4 progeny rows were grown and 5 plants were individually harvested from the 11 plots selected on the basis of agronomic characteristics and seed quality. In 2013, these F5 families were grown in double rows in a nursery in Saskatoon. A total of 5 F5 families were then selected on the basis of agronomic performance and seed quality to be evaluated in preliminary replicated yield trials in 2014. The F6 seeds, harvested by hand from the middle of each nursery plot, were used for breeder seed increases in Saskatoon and Lethbridge, Alberta. The yield trial results showed that three lines (full siblings) possessed very similar agronomic and seed quality traits. Consequently, these lines were equally bulked and designated as 14CS0887. In 2015, additional field trials and analyses of the fatty acid composition were evaluated.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'SES0887IOR' conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the Ag-Quest Research Station in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan were planted in a RCB design with 2 replications per variety. Each 9 metre squared plot consisted of 6 rows 6 metres in length with a spacing of 0.20 metres between rows. Measurements were taken from 60 plants or 60 parts of plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
