Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Calena' and 'Suneson'

Summary: At the rosette stage, the pubescence on the upper side of the leaf for 'E3902' is of a medium density whereas it is dense for 'Suneson'. The leaf of 'E3902' is longer than the leaf of 'Calena' and narrower than the reference varieties. 'E3902' has a large leaf length to width ratio whereas the reference varieties have a medium leaf length to width ratio. The plants of 'E3902' flower mid to late season whereas the plants of 'Suneson' flower early in the season. The colour of the seed of 'E3902' is yellow whereas the seed of the reference varieties is orange brown.

Description:

PLANT: open pollinated spring type, natural height is medium to tall after flowering, flowers and matures mid to late season

STEM: medium length, short up to the first branch, branching on primary stem at the base, erect to semi-erect branch attitude, medium thickness at ground level, medium number of branches

LEAF: weak undulation of margin, medium density of pubescence on upper side at rosette stage, long, medium width, large length to width ratio

FLOWER: yellow petal
INFRUCTESCENCE (middle third at maturity): loose compactness of silicles
SILICLE: short to medium length, pyriform shape, semi-erect attitude
PEDICEL: medium to long, semi-erect to horizontal attitude

SEED: yellow

Origin & Breeding History: 'E3902' was developed using CRISPR-Cas9 technology resulting in a triple-gene edit of a proprietary line. The initial floral dipping took place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2016 with the resulting plants screened for the introduced gene edits in the greenhouse in January 2017. Over the next three greenhouse cycles from 2017 to 2018, the traits were fixed by selfing the plants. 'E3902' was selected as a null segregant containing only the desired traits. 'E3902' was selected based on seed colour and oil content along with general agronomic characteristics. Breeder seed was established at the F11 generation in 2023.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'E3902' were conducted in Elm Creek, Manitoba during 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. There were 3 replicates per variety arranged in a RCB design. n Each replicate consisted of 5 rows approximately 5 to 5.5 metres long. The plot size was approximately 9 square metres with a seeding density of 350 seeds per square metre in 2022 and 450 seeds per square metre in 2023. The observations and measurements were taken from 60 plants, or 60 parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
