Summary: The cotyledon length of 'N90-740' is longer than that of 'Midas' and 'Crésor'. 'N90-740' is shorter in plant height than 'Crésor'. The silique beak of 'N90-740' is shorter and the silique length is longer than those of the reference varieties.
Description:
'N90-740' is an open-pollinated spring canola variety. The cotyledon is medium to wide and the seedling stem anthocyanin colouration is weak to medium. The largest lower leaf has very weak to weak lobe development and margins with very shallow rounded indentation. Leaf blade glaucosity is weak to medium. The plant is short to medium in height. The flowers are fertile and yellow in colour. The silique is medium in length with a short silique beak and medium to long pedicel. The seed coat colour is black. Plants have fair lodging resistance.
Origin & Breeding History: 'N90-740' was developed at the Agriculture & Agri-Food Research Centre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The original cross ('Crésor' x 'Westar') was made in 1982. Doubled haploids were applied to F1 plants of the original cross and evaluated in the blackleg disease nursery. These selections were backcrossed to 'Westar' in 1986 to improve maturity. The pedigree method was used to select plants with maturity, blackleg resistance, oil content and yield. 'N90-740' was tested as 'ACS-N14'.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'N90-740' were conducted at the Elora, Research Station, Elora, Ontario during 1995 and 1996. Trials were arranged in 2 replicates with 7 row plots.
