Summary: 'TR7' has lower glucosinolate levels than those of the reference varieties, 'Parkland' and 'Reward'.
Description:
'TR7' is an open-pollinated spring canola variety. The cotyledon is narrow to medium in width. The leaves are light green with a medium to horizontal leaf attitude. The largest lower leaf has some lobe development and margins with short to medium depth rounded indentation. The plants are short with yellow flowers. The silique is very short to short with a long silique beak and a medium to long pedicel. The seed coat colour is mixed with approximately 41-50% yellow seed. Lodging resistance is poor to fair.
Origin & Breeding History: 'TR7' was developed at the Agriculture & Agri-Food Research Centre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. 'TR7' was derived from the canola quality cultivar 'Tobin'. Low glucosinolate plants with good yellow seed colour were selected from 'Tobin' and evaluated in progeny rows in 1985. Selections with ultra-low glucosinolate content were inter-crossed and successive crosses were selected based on this. Five plants of each selected cross were bulked and sown in a composite crossing block in 1986. Two cycles of recurrent selection were evaluated in replicated nurseries. Following the second cycle of recurrent selection, progeny were selected based on high seed oil content, height, ultra-low glucosinolate content ( less than or equal to 2 micromoles) and good agronomic performance. 'TR7' was tested as 'BC-8618'.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'TR7' were conducted at the Elora, Research Station, Elora, Ontario during 1997 and 1998. Trials were arranged in 2 replicates with 7 row plots.
