Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Parkland' and 'Reward'
Summary: The silique and silique beak of 'TR4' are shorter than those of the reference varieties, 'Parkland' and 'Reward'.
Description:
'TR4' is an open-pollinated spring canola variety. The cotyledon is narrow to medium in width. The leaves are light green with a semi-erect to medium attitude. The largest lower leaf has some lobe development and margins with medium depth rounded indentation. The plants are short with yellow flowers. The silique is very short to short with a medium length silique beak and a medium to long pedicel. The seed coat colour is mixed with approximately 21-30% yellow seed. Lodging resistance is fair to good.
Origin & Breeding History: 'TR4' was developed at the Agriculture & Agri-Food Research Centre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. 'TR4' was derived from the cross between the canola quality strain BC86-18 and a double low yellow strain, designated DLY made in 1988. Initial selections were made in October 1989 for low indole and low alkenyl glucosinolates. This formed the base seed for several cycles of selection. Selection criteria were predominantly glucosinolate content and seed colour and quantity.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'TR4' were conducted at the Elora, Research Station, Elora, Ontario during 1997 and 1998. Trials were arranged in 2 replicates with 7 row plots.
