Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Alto' and 'Quantum'
Summary: 'Hi-Q' has a higher oil content than both reference varieties. The leaves of 'Hi-Q' are less lobed than those of the reference varieties. The cotyledons of 'Hi-Q' are narrower than those of the reference variety, 'Alto'. The seeds of 'Hi-Q' are black whereas the seeds of 'Alto' are mixed.
Description:
'Hi-Q' is a spring canola variety. The cotyledons are medium in length. Leaf blades are medium to dark green with few sharp lobes which are shallow to medium in depth. Flower petals are yellow. The siliques are short to medium in length with a short beak and a short to medium length pedicel. Plants are short. The seeds are black. Resistance to lodging is fair.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Hi-Q' was developed at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta. 'Hi-Q' is a doubled haploid line derived from a series of crosses initiated in 1989. Doubled haploid lines resulting from the cross 'Shiralee' X 'Dwarf F-6' were screened for blackleg resistance and agronomic characteristics, resulting in the selection of Line 91-1026. This line was crossed with 'Alto' and doubled haploid plants were selected for blackleg resistance, agronomic qualities and high oil and protein content resulting in Line 91-5174-1. This line was crossed with 'Quantum' with the resulting F1 derived doubled haploid selected as above resulting in Line A97-14N. Seed of this line was first grown in the field in 1995. Line A97-14N was selected for vigour, uniformity, straw strength, high number of well-filled pods, resistance to blackleg, and high oil and protein content. It was tested for performance at 5 locations in replicated trials in 1996.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Hi-Q' were conducted at the Elora Research Station, Elora, Ontario during the summers of 1998 and 1999. Trials were arranged in 2 replicates with 7 row plots. Observations were made on 60 plants or parts of plants. 'Hi-Q' was tested as 'A97-14N'. Means within the table are based on a two year average of 60 plant parts for silique traits, 30 plants for height measurements and 50 cotyledon measurements. Differences in the table are significant at the 2% probability level based on LSD values.
