Summary: 'NS4304' has a narrower and shorter cotyledon than 'NS4303'. 'NS4304' has a shorter petiole than '46A76'. The flower petal length is shorter in 'NS4304' than in '46A65'. 'NS4304' has a wider flower petal than 'NS4303'. 'NS4304' has a shorter silique and beak than 'NS4303', '46A65', '46A76', 'Legacy', and 'Q2'. The silique width is narrower in 'NS4304' than in 'NS4303', '46A65', 'Legacy', and 'Q2'. 'NS4304' has a shorter pedicel than '46A65', and 'Legacy'. 'NS4304' is susceptible to imidazolinone while '46A76' is resistant.

Description:

'NS4304' is a spring canola variety. The cotyledons are medium in width and length. Leaf blades are medium to dark green with very few, rounded to sharp lobes which are shallow to medium in depth. The leaves are medium in length and width with a very short petiole. The yellow flower petals are medium in length and narrow to medium in width. The anthers shed pollen. The erect to semi-erect siliques are very short in length and narrow in width with a short beak and short to medium pedicel length. The plants are short in height and mature mid-season. Seed colour is brown to black. 'NS4304' has very low erucic acid content and medium glucosinolates. The chlorophyll content is medium in 'NS4304'. 'NS4304' is susceptible to glyphosate and imidazolinone.

Origin & Breeding History: 'NS4304' was developed by pedigree selection at Georgetown Research Center of Pioneer Hi-Bred Production Ltd. in 1998. The F1 plants were grown in the greenhouse and were harvested in bulk. The F2 plants were also grown in the greenhouse, and plants were individually harvested to produce F3 lines. The F3 lines were evaluated in the 1999 nursery in Georgetown where the lines were selected for uniformity, early maturity, high oil, high protein, low glucosinolates and general vigour. The remnant seed of the F3 line was simultaneously planted in the greenhouse and were selected based on marker assisted selection. Each selfed F3 plant was harvested individually and then the F4 rows were grown in isolation in Chile to observe for general vigour and uniformity. The F5 seed produced under large bags was bulked from about 30 rows. The F5 seed became the source of breeder seed.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at Georgetown Research Center of Pioneer Hi-Bred Production Ltd., Georgetown, Ontario in the summers of 2000 and 2002. Each plot consisted of two rows spaced 0.5 metres apart and 2 metres in length, replicated three times in a RCB design.
