Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: '32-60' and 'Ebony'

Summary: '1818' has wider cotyledons than '32-60'. The leaf of '1818' is shorter with fewer lobes than 'Ebony'. '1818' has a longer silique than 'Ebony'. The beak of '1818' is shorter than in 'Ebony'. '1818' has a shorter pedicel than '32-60'. The plant height of '1818' is shorter than '32-60' and 'Ebony'.

Description:

'1818' is a Roundup Ready open pollinated spring canola variety. The cotyledons are narrow to medium in width. Leaf blades are medium to dark green in colour with a few lobes present. The leaf margin is sharp with dentations that are shallow in depth. The leaves are short to medium in length and narrow in width. '1818' has yellow flower petals. The siliques are medium to long in length with a medium length beak and short to medium pedicel length. The plants are short in height. Seed colour is mixed black and brown. '1818' has low erucic acid content and low glucosinolates. '1818' has fair to good lodging resistance. '1818' is resistant to glyphosate herbicides.

Origin & Breeding History: '1818' was derived from a cross made by Monsanto Canada, in Listowel, Ontario in 1996. The segregating generations were selected for oil content, lodging resistance, yield and glyphosate tolerance. At the F5 generation, one plant was selected from which '1818' originates.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at Elora Research Station, of the University of Guelph, Elora, Ontario in the summers of 2003 and 2004. Plots consisted of 4 rows, 6 meters in length with a row spacing of 40 cm. There were 2 replications arranged in an RCB design.
