Summary: ‘PPS02-366' has narrower cotyledons than ‘2733'. ‘PPS02-366' has fewer leaf lobes than ‘PPS98-274' and ‘PPS02-367'. The density of leaf margin dentations of ‘PPS02-366' is less than ‘PPS98-274' and ‘PPS02-367'. ‘PPS02-366' flowers later than ‘2733' and ‘Ebony'. The flower petal width of ‘PPS02-366' is narrower than ‘Ebony'. The silique attitude of ‘PPS02-366' is semi-erect while it is erect for ‘PPS02-367'. ‘PPS02-366' has a shorter silique than ‘Ebony'. The beak length of ‘PPS02-366' is shorter than ‘Ebony' and ‘PPS98-274'. ‘PPS02-366' has a taller plant height at maturity than ‘2733' and ‘Ebony'. The thousand seed weight of ‘PPS02-366' is less than ‘PPS98-274'. ‘PPS02-366' is resistant to glufosinate ammonium herbicides while ‘Ebony' is not.

Description:

‘PPS02-366' is a male fertile inbred spring canola variety containing the Rf3 gene construct. The cotyledons are narrow to medium in width and medium in length. Leaf blades are light green in colour with a few to medium number of lobes. The leaf margin is sharp with a low to medium density of dentations that are shallow in depth. The leaves are long in length with medium width and a medium length petiole. The yellow flower petals are medium to long in length and narrow to medium in width. The semi-erect siliques are short to medium in length and narrow to medium in width with a short to medium beak length and medium to long pedicel length. The plants are tall in height at maturity. Seed colour is black. ‘PPS02-366' has very low erucic acid content and low glucosinolates. ‘PPS02-366' is resistant to glufosinate ammonium herbicides.

Origin & Breeding History: ‘PPS02-366' is a restorer line in the process of F1 hybrid production. ‘PPS02-366' was derived as a doubled haploid 99-97-149 containing the Rf3 gene in the homozygous state. The cross and doubled haploid line extraction occurred in Canada in 1999 with the pedigree as 99CBN090/99CBN091//98N16628/98CGH071. ‘PPS02-366' was selected in 2001 on the basis of fertility restoration of numerous male sterile lines and expression of tolerance to glufosinate-ammonium herbicide. Other selection parameters included height, vigor, maturity, blackleg resistance, oil content, fatty acid profile, glucosinolate content, and combining ability. Breeder seed production commenced in 2003.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at the Bayer CropScience facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2003, 2004. Plots consisted of 3 rows 6 meters in length with 50 cm row spacing. There were 2 replications laid out in a RCB design.
