Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'DS Roughrider' and 'Minot'
Summary: The leaf margin of '1878V' has shallower indentations than in 'DS Roughrider'. '1878V' has a larger leaf than 'Minot'. '1878V' flowers later than 'DS Roughrider' and 'Minot'. The silique of '1878V' is shorter than in 'DS Roughrider'.
Description:
'1878V' is a spring canola variety. The cotyledons are short to medium in length and width. Leaf blades are medium green in colour with medium number of lobes present. The leaf margin is rounded to sharp with dentations that are medium in depth. The leaves are short to medium in length and narrow in width. '1878V' has yellow flower petals. The siliques are short in length, with a very short to short beak and short pedicel. The plants are short to medium in height at maturity. Seed colour is black. '1878V' has very low erucic acid content and low glucosinolates. '1878V' is resistant to glyphosate herbicides.
Origin & Breeding History: '1878V' is a glyphosate tolerant spring canola variety. The initial cross took place in 1996 in Hohenlieth, Germany between DS-Roughrider x Q2. The F1 was selfed in the greenhouse in 1996/1997. In 1997 the F2 was screened in the field in Morden, Manitoba beginning with a pedigree selection scheme with recurrent selection. The F3, F4 and F5 generations were screened and selected for glyphosate tolerance, agronomy and quality characteristics in Morden, Manitoba. At the F5, single plants were selected and selfed in 2000. In 2001 and 2002 they were in a replicated yield and spray trials in Western Canada and were selected for yield, blackleg tolerance, herbicide tolerance and agronomic and quality characteristics. In 2002 there was greenhouse multiplication from the selfed F5 plants. The line was entered into private Coop Trials in Western Canada in 2003. Breeder seed multiplication began in 2003. The line was tested in the WCC/RRC Coop trials in 2004 and was supported for variety registration that same year.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at the Elora Research Station, Elora, Ontario in the summers of 2004 and 2005. Plots consisted of 4 rows that were 7 metres in length and had a row spacing of 40 cm. There were 2 replications arranged in RCB design.
