Varieties used for comparison: 'PPS98-274', 'PPS02-364' and '5440'

Summary: The cotyledon of 'PR2CN543' is shorter than that of 'PPS98-274'. The leaf of 'PR2CN543' has very few to few lobes whereas those of 'PPS98-274' and '5440' have a medium number of lobes. The leaf margin of 'PR2CN543' is rounded whereas it is sharp for 'PPS98-274' and 'PPS02-364'. The leaf of 'PR2CN543' is shorter than that of 'PPS98-274' and '5440' and narrower than all the reference varieties. The petiole of 'PR2CN543' is shorter than that of '5440' and is longer than that of 'PPS02-364'. 'PR2CN543' flowers later than the reference varieties. The petal of 'PR2CN543' is shorter than that of the reference varieties and narrower than that of '5440'. 'PR2CN543' has a shorter silique and beak than the reference varieties. At maturity, the plant of 'PR2CN543' is shorter than that of 'PPS98-274' and taller than that of 'PPS02-364'. 'PR2CN543' is later maturing than 'PPS02-364' and '5440'.

CHEMICAL REACTION: resistant to glufosinate ammonium herbicides
DISEASE REACTION: resistant to Blackleg (Leptosphaeria maculans asexual stage: Phoma lingam)

Origin & Breeding History: 'PR2CN543' is a restorer line in the process of F1 hybrid production. It was derived by crossing a doubled haploid line containing the Rf3 gene construct in homozygous state to a donor line. The cross was made in Canada in 2010. The final backcross was done in 2012. 'PR2CN543' was selected in 2012 on the basis of fertility restoration of numerous male sterile lines and expression of tolerance to glufosinate-ammonium herbicide. Other selection parameters included height, vigour, maturity, blackleg resistance, oil content, linolenic acid content, fatty acid profile, glucosinolate content and combining ability.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials conducted during the summers of 2013 and 2014 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan were set up in a RCB Design with 3 replications per variety. Each year, the plots consisted of 3 rows that were 6 metres in length with a spacing of 25 cm between rows and 50 cm between plots. The measured characteristics were based on 30 measurements of the cotyledon, leaf, flower and plant height and 60 measurements of the silique. The means were based on a two year average. Mean differences were significant at the 2% probability level based on LSD values.
